Safe & Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent for the Whole Family
Who knew there would be a need for a list of safe and non-toxic laundry detergent in todays world?! Until we get better regulation on the chemicals that are mass produced in the US, we have to be intentional about doing the digging & finding what is safe for our families. Hopefully, I can take part of the guessing & researching off your plate!
Over 80,000 chemicals were approved in the US for use by the TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act) and yet only 200 of the toxins were tested for human safety. How can this be? Moreover, a study found that almost 300 chemicals are being passed from the mother to her newborn. They found this by testing newborns umbilical cords. These chemicals are from toxins in food, personal care, environmental and household products. We need to know these facts, so we can change what we are doing.
If you haven’t already, download EWG’s (Environmental Working Group) two apps on your phone. They have the ‘Think Dirty’ & ‘Healthy Living powered by Skin Deep’. You can search or scan your products. I am that nutty mom in the grocery stores & Target scanning my products. The lower the number, the less toxic (or completely non-toxic) it is! The higher the number, the more you want to avoid products like this as they can contain endocrine disrupting, cancer causing chemicals.
You may be as surprised as I was when I was looking for safe baby products for my oldest, that the baby DREFT laundry detergent rates a 9!!! This is completely unacceptable. It appears that this is a safe product especially because it’s geared towards our babies, and who would exploit our kids like this? Also, Method is a popular brand many people think is safe. Their products rate pretty high according to the EWG :(
I have compiled a list of safe & non-toxic laundry detergents for you here. After all, switching your laundry detergent is much easier than kicking your sugar addiction (wink). And every swap counts, no matter how small you think it may be. This list of non-toxic & safe detergents are not the only ones that are non-toxic on the market. However, I have found these to be convenient & ones that we have used that I’d love to share with you. When I had one child, I used to love to make my own laundry detergent. That is so funny to think about! Because now I look for anything and everything that is quick, easy, and safe :)
Puracy laundry detergent. This company is now the #1 best-seller on Amazon and for good reason. You can find their ingredient list here. Puracy ingredients are plant-based, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, free of harsh chemicals, and child and pet safe, & the bottles are biodegradable. I actually cannot find this their laundry detergent on the EWG site, but see they use clean ingredients and their other products rate well. You can now find these products at most Target stores too.
Attitude Living. This rates a 0 on the EWG, and while I haven’t tried this brand, I am still recommending it because it has great reviews & has been around for a while! You can find more information here.
Molly Suds. This is a wonderful laundry detergent a lot of people rave about. You can now find Molly Suds even at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Earthfare, Amazon & more.
Dan’s Soap. This is a local Cleveland company! Woo woo! They use only 3 non-toxic ingredients- talk about safe! You can find this laundry detergent at Heinen’s, Whole Foods, and even Amazon.
Branch Basics. Branch Basics is a non-toxic, safe and powerful concentrated cleaning formula that can be diluted for virtually any cleaning use - from dishes, windows and laundry to veggies, faces and pets! Find their ingredient list here.
All Free & Clear. Now this is a main stream laundry detergent that you probably didn’t think would rate well. It rates a 3 on the EWG. Not as good as a 0, but it’s definitely acceptable, and Costco sells this in bulk!
Seventh Generation 4x Ultra Concentrated. This brand/type of laundry detergent rates a 0 on the EWG.
Seventh Generation All Free & Clear. This also rates a 0 on the EWG.
Honest Laundry Pods. This brand rates a 0 on the EWG. While Honest CO. has been caught not being as honest as they have claimed, I still want to point out that this rates very well & depending on what store you’re in, you may not have a ton of options.
Please tell me what safe & non-toxic laundry detergent is your favorite !
