10 Things To Have On Hand Before School Lets Out!

It’s a good thing to start thinking ahead to summer before the kids get out of school. With a few basics, you’ll go into the summer time feeling READY for it all!

It’s such a nice break to go from school days to summer days with the kids. However, I find it to be even harder to keep the house clean & make meals since we are outside all day long it seems! If you have these 10 things on hand before school lets out, you’ll make the transition to summer a smooth one!

1. Peanut Butter & Jelly

Peanut butter and jelly is the all time staple in our house, especially for the summer time. PB&J’s never tasted so good as when you eat them after a long day at the pool. We look for Heinen’s Organic Peanut Butter without added sugar, and use Crofter’s Organic Jelly. The simple PB&J can get a little boring over time so switch it up with these PB&J ideas:

-Simple Mills Crackers + PB&J

-Rice Cakes + PB&J (sprinkle chia seeds for an added punch of protein & healthy fats)

-Maria & Ricardo Organic Wrap + PB&J (it’s much easier to sprinkle chia seeds in here and kids not even notice)

-Sliced Apples + PB&J

-Rudi’s Organic Hot Dog Bun + PB&J (so different, right?! Our kids laughed at me when I did this before, but thought it tasted good!)

2. Paper ‘Zip Lock’ Bags

Snacks are a must have for the summertime! The kids burn SO much energy and I love that about summer! These paper bags are ecofriendly and do the trick of keeping snacks fresh and ready to go when you need them! Find them next to the siren wrap at Heinen’s. 

3. Healthy Drinks

Being conscious of how much everyone is drinking in the summer time is SO important! Kids are more worried about playing, than eating and drinking, so we have to be intentional about making sure kids drink enough. And don’t forget about yourself Mama! Water is best; flavor your water with strawberries, lemons, limes, watermelon & mint. But summer also calls for juice boxes & other drinks as well :) Here are my favorite drinks for myself & the kids found at Heinen’s. 

    • For the Moms. Evolution Green Juices, Garden of Life Juices, Kombucha, MINT, Vital Protein Collagen (to add to your water), SPINDRIFT (sparkling water made without ‘natural flavors & in a BPA free can), and TRULY for a spike gluten free sparkling drink!

    • For the Kids. Honest Organic Juice, Body Armor (higher in sugar, so dilute 50% water), MINT, &/or Organic Gatorade. 

4. Cleaning Supplies

It’s almost harder to keep the house clean in the summer vs. the school year because of how much we are outside. Declutter before the summer and you’ll have less to clean up. Having the kids do chores is an essential part of summer (and all year long)! Have them help with cleaning with these nontoxic cleaning supplies!

5. Essential Oils

Essential oils are great for a lot of things. Diffuse Organic Lavendar, Peppermint, and Lemon if you are having seasonal allergies when the pollen count is high. Diffuse Organic Lavendar for 20 minutes bed for a good nights rest. Citronella Essential Oil is great for keeping the mosquitos away so diffuse outside wherever you’re sitting outside for another way to keep the mosquitos away. 

6. Coffee

Need I say more?! Fuel up on good quality coffee in the morning, like Bulletproof. Most people are surprised to learn there are more chemicals in their coffee than on an average pharmacy shelf. Mold is commonly found in coffee. Bulletproof is free of mold and other toxins! 

7. Hydrogen Peroxide & Bandades

Summer time comes along with scrapes, cuts and bruises. There is something about a mothers hug, and a bandage that does the trick to get your kid to stop crying and get back outside with their friends. Clean cuts with hydrogen peroxide & doctor them up with a bandage. Hydrogen peroxide also gets blood out of clothes if you put it on the spot before you place in the washing machine. 

8. Sunscreen & Mosquito Repellent

With hot sun, comes the need for sunscreen. Heinen’s carries different options for sunscreens, and we like to use Alba. Don’t forget about the mosquito repellent! It’s right next to the sunscreen at Heinens. 

9. Fruit & Veggies

“Eat your water”. Drinking a lot of water is essential for summer and so is eating a lot of fruit & veggies. They contain so much water, and also tons of phytonutrients, minerals & vitamins (naturally). Watermelon is a staple here in the summer, as it makes for the best snack! Get creative if your up for it, and use muffin tin trays to serve a variety of fruits and vegetables & let them know we should be ‘eating the rainbow’ everyday. 

10. Popcicles

Last but not least, the all time kid favorite in summer! We like to make our popsicles as well as buy them for the convenience. To make popsicles, just take leftover smoothie and add it to a popsicle mold & freeze until ready to eat. Heinen’s carries one our favorite brand, Froozers to have on hand for the kids. As far as cooking goes, if you tucked those favorite crock pot recipes away, pull them back out for the summer! On the days you know you will be gone and expending a lot of energy & don’t feel like cooking when you walk through the door, use the crock pot in the morning so dinner is ready when you walk in the door. That is the best feeling when you have dinner cooking already in the morning!
