What GMO's Are & Why You Should Avoid Them!

What Has Changed Over the Past 30 Years?

The autoimmune epidemic, food allergies, obesity, diabetes, babies getting acid reflux, recurrent ear infections, cancer (1 out of 2 men & 1 out of 3 women will develop cancer in their lifetime), infertility, & miscarriages are now so common it has become the new normal.  The United States is one of the most industrialized nation in the world, yet have the highest infant mortality rate

We have to ask ourselves what has changed? And the answer is: OUR FOOD SUPPLY HAS DRASTICALLY CHANGED.

What is a GMO?

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a LABORATORY through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Why do we even have GMO’s? Monsanto, a large biotech company, invented Roundup (a powerful weedkiller) that was killing the weeds AND the crops. So instead of reformulating a new weedkiller, they took food into their hands and manipulated food in a lab to withstand the powerful weedkiller. GMO’s hit the grocery shelves in the 1990’s for the first time. And now 80% of packaged foods in the grocery store contain GMO’s!

Quick Facts on GMO’s

  • 62 other countries ban or require labeling for GMO’s since they are not proven safe. The U.S. does not require labeling and is the largest producer of GMO crops.

  • Monsanto is a large biotech company that developed Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide, and became a major producer of genetically engineered crops.

  • In 1996, peanut allergies increased by 20% after genetically modified soy went widespread in the U.S. Soy allergies jumped 50% the year genetically engineered soy went widespread in the U.K.

  • In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup® and other weed killers, as “probably carcinogenic to humans” In July of 2017 the California State Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added glyphosate to its Prop 65 list of known carcinogens.

  • Glyphosate herbicides have also been found to be linked to various cancers specifically lymphoma, are endocrine disruptors, neurotoxic, and a cause of liver disease. Global studies show that we are routinely exposed to dangerous levels of glypohsate. The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that our children are the most vulnerable to pesticides & we need to take action to protect the future.

  • Over 11,000 Americans are currently suing Monsanto, the manufacturer of glyphosate herbicides, for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. The Justice Department is investigating Monsanto for corruption, coverups, and collusion with the EPA in relation to the carcinogenic effects of glyphosate.

  • In Hawaii, there has been a ten-fold increase in birth defects near GMO and/or chemical farming reported along with asthma, cancer, and other illnesses on the rise. The residents are speaking up and taking action.

  • Parks, streets, sidewalks, parking lots, schools, daycare facilities, universities, sports fields, and playgrounds are being sprayed with Roundup. [Pesticides including glyphosate have already been banned in Connecticut for use on school and daycare grounds]

  • Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, and HPV vaccines all contain GMO’s.

  • The United States has made it so hard to know whether or not foods here contain GMO’s. When you’re in the grocery store a 5 digit code: 9-xxxx means it’s organic.

A 5 digit code: 8-xxxx means it a GMO food. A 4 digit: xxxx means it contains pesticides. A great rule of thumb; if you buy organic, that means the food/product is nonGMO. The EPA has recently confirmed that the common practice of spraying Roundup without barriers for 4 hours is in fact, against the directions on the label and against the law.

  • Canola, corn, soy, papaya, cotton, sugar beets are the most genetically engineered crops. And soy and corn are in just about everything!

Where to Start: How to Get GMO’s Out of Your Life

  1. Buy organic. The first thing to do is to start with your family. Start buying organic food. When you buy organic it means it is nonGMO. If you cannot buy organic, look for the nonGMO Project label. This means it doesn’t contain GMO’s but it may still contain pesticides & herbicides.

  2. Purchase a water filter. We have a whole house water filter we purchased through Minehaha Outlet. There are many local companies you can use. If you cannot afford a whole house water filter at the moment, I recommend the Berkey or Clearly Filtered water pitchers/stand.

  3. ALWAYS buy these foods organic as they tested very high in glyphosate (the main ingredient in Roundup) when tested by Moms Across America in children : bean flours, chickpea products, soy flour, oatmeal, pea products, lentil products, pizza products, millet, buckwheat, flour, bran, wheat.

  4. 10 more way to avoid GMO’s found on Dr. Friedman’s blog.

It can see overwhelming on where to start. Baby steps! Buying organic & getting a water filter goes a long way. Also, share what you know with other so they can get on the same page as you are. One mom. One family. One city at a time :)
