Natural Remedies For The Flu
There are safe & natural remedies that can be very helpful if you come down with the flu. Prevention is always best, but anyone can come down with the flu and it’s comforting to know there are options other than Tylenol, Motrin, Sudafed & Benadryl. It’s best to start natural remedies at the first sign of the flu to shorten the duration & severity of the illness.
Oscillococcinum! This is THE homeopathic flu remedy you want in your house BEFORE you come down with the flu so you can start it right away. Studies have proven that taking Oscillococcinum at the onset of symptoms can shorten the duration of illness. Take as directed; 1 vial 3 times/day. The dose is the same for adults and children. For an infant, you can dissolve in water and give with a syringe.
Homeopathy is one of the safest & most effective forms of medicine. It is safe for elderly, pregnant woman, infants, children, adults and has no side effects.
Lil Giggle Medicated Lollipops

Hylands 4 Kids Cold N Cough Day & Night
I always have this in our medicine cabinet. It helps with the incessant cough that nothing else seems to help. Find it here.
Elderberries are known to support the immune system and help with colds & flu. This study showed "Sixty patients (aged 18-54 years) suffering from influenza-like symptoms for 48 h or less were enrolled in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study during the influenza season of 1999-2000 in Norway. Patients received 15 ml of elderberry or placebo syrup four times a day for 5 days, and recorded their symptoms using a visual analogue scale. Symptoms were relieved on average 4 days earlier and use of rescue medication was significantly less in those receiving elderberry extract compared with placebo. Elderberry extract seems to offer an efficient, safe and cost-effective treatment for influenza. These findings need to be confirmed in a larger study". Wellness Mama has a great recipe on her blog. We take Juice Plus+ which has elderberries in it. I personally cannot take a concentrated dose of straight elderberries with my autoimmune disease. I have made this mistake in the past, and it triggered the same response to my immune system as eating gluten! I'll never make that mistake again. This study explores a general allergic reaction to elderberries & here is an article talking about autoimmune diseases & taking elderberry.
This is a natural folk remedy for those stubborn coughs that are deep and won’t go away. The antibiotic and antiviral compounds of onion and garlic can ease inflammation, loosen up mucous, and help expectoration.
Chop 1 onion & 3 organic garlic cloves. Let it sit for 15 minutes to increase medicinal properties. Cover with organic olive oil and let sit for 3 hours. Rub on bottom of feet. You can even put the poultice on the bottom of your feet with socks on while sleeping. Check out Raising Generation’s onion poultice recipe.

Silver Shield is a colloidal silver made by Nature’s Sunshine products. Silver Shield with Aqua Sol Technology is a formula of silver particles suspended in deionized water. Nature’s Sunshine Silver Shield is 18ppm (parts per million). This patented formula fights against bacteria, fungi, viruses and all other pathogens in a safer and more effective way than any other antibiotic. This silver is safe for children, adults and your pets.
Essential oils are very helpful and powerful tools to use while combatting any illness. (However, they should be used with caution. Never ingest any oils. Many oils cannot be used on or near children, pets or pregnant women. Oil takes oil off. If you accidentally get an oil on you or your child and want to get it off, use avocado, olive, almond or coconut oil). Organic lavender essential oil is a great choice because it’s safe for the whole family & it can reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, help fight infection and can calm a miserable child down. I also really like Organic Defence which helps clear sinuses & clean the air. Organic Eucalyptus should not be used on kids 7 and under. This is a great EO to diffuse for congestion for 7 and older. Diffuse 3-5 drops in your diffuser for 30 minutes on, 60 minutes off.
Respiratory Rub from Scentsable Health. This is a SAFE rub you can use on your babies chest and feet. I LOVE it and cannot live without it during the winter.
The “Valley of Harmony” (L1-4) is often used for cold and flu. It can also be used for cold hands and feet, constipation, eczema, headaches, menstrual disorders, sinus problems, sore throats, and ulcers. L1-4 is found in the center of the web – or the “V” – between your thumb and index finger on both hands. Apply steady pressure with your opposite thumb until you feel a slight soreness, and hold for 2 minutes. Repeat on your other hand.
Vitamin D is essential to increase when you have the flu. Check with your primary care physician on dosage.
Don’t forget the basics! Get lots of sleep. Stop eating. Many people think you need to eat to keep up your energy, but this is backwards. Eating diverts body energies away from flushing the disease from the body. Use a humidifier at night.
Symptoms from the flu is your immune system working to cure you. Fever is used to inhibit viral replication and alert the immune system to the presence of invaders. Using analgesics to reduce fever actually allows the virus to spread and slows the immune system’s ability to respond effectively. For anyone over the age of 2, there is no danger from fever of 102 or less. If you use Acetametaphen for infants/children make sure you use a dye free one like Little Remedies, and a dye-free Ibuprofen.
Our standard line-up through out the year for the kids is a probiotic, Juice Plus+ Chewables & vitamin D. I add Nature’s Sunshine kid elderberry chewable for our kids (which has vitamin D so I don’t have to give it separately). JP chewables + Elderberry chewable can easily go into your kids lunch box every day. Thats what we do :)
We managed to come down with confirmed Influenza A this year (2017) and it surprisingly only lasted 1 day for myself, husband and 2 boys. It lasted a little longer for our daughters. Food is medicine and prevention with a whole food diet does indeed work!
Please do your research on Tamiflu. It has serious side effects, and at best only decreases duration of the flu less than a day. Check out this study, "These data suggest Tamiflu use could induce sudden deterioration leading to death especially within 12 hours of prescription. These findings are consistent with sudden deaths observed in a series of animal toxicity studies, several reported case series and the results of prospective cohort studies. From "the precautionary principle" the potential harm of Tamiflu should be taken into account and further detailed studies should be conducted".
“FEVER: Keeping it at Bay
Although not every fever needs to be treated, there are some things you can do to help make your child more comfortable.
If your child is under two years of age, contact your pediatrician or pharmacist for the correct dose. For older children, follow the recommended dose on the label.
Do not overdress your child. Other practices to reduce fevers such as an alcohol bath, ice packs, etc. are no longer recommended and can actually have adverse effects on your child.
A fever will also cause a child to lose fluids more quickly, so offer plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Signs of dehydration include crying without tears, a dry mouth, and fewer wet diapers.
Keep your digital thermometer ready and accessible so you don't have to search for it once your child is ill.
Have children's acetaminophen or ibuprofen on hand.
Make sure your pediatrician's phone number is handy.
When to Call the Doctor
Call your child's doctor right away if your child has a fever and:
Looks very ill, is unusually drowsy, or is very fussy
Has been in a very hot place, such as an overheated car
Has other symptoms, such as a stiff neck, severe headache, severe sore throat, severe ear pain, an unexplained rash, or repeated vomiting or diarrhea
Has signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth, sunken soft spot or significantly fewer wet diapers and is not able to take in fluids
Has immune system problems, such as sickle cell disease or cancer, or is taking steroids
Has had a seizure
Is younger than 3 months (12 weeks) and has a temperature of 100.4°F (38.0°C) or higher
Fever rises above 104°F (40°C) repeatedly for a child of any age
Also call your child's doctor if:
Your child still "acts sick" once his fever is brought down.
Your child seems to be getting worse.
The fever persists for more than 24 hours in a child younger than 2 years.
The fever persists for more than 3 days (72 hours) in a child 2 years of age or older”. Healthychildren.org
